I grew up in a toxic environment where negative emotions were punished, positive emotions rewarded, and all emotion was either buried (negative) or faked (positive). This early programming of my nervous system led to lifelong issues of emotional disregulation, mental health issues, deep confusion, poor relationships – the list goes on – despite being “highly functioning” as military serviceperson for 30 years. I’ve been on a long journey of trying to figure out what serenity and confidence feels like without the drugs, roller coaster emotions, reacting to triggers, “shadow work” (which only made things worse), or relying on any external source. Your articles have more answers for me on how to navigate the complex terrain of emotions than just about anything I’ve ever read. Thank you, Kelly.
